Joseph was given the task to have the world’s largest diamond named the Cullinan diamond to be cut, which was about 3,000 carats. It was in the Royal Family’s possession. From that period, it was the favorite cut of choice among those who belonged to the upper noble class, and it was in the 1920’s that it reached its peak of popularity. However, this cut gem type saw decline because of limited production. It was only in 2000 that they became available in the market and could be found with antique jewelry dealers and antique shops.

A stir was definitely caused by the industry with its resurrection, making it presently the most sought after engagement rings across the globe.

Things to consider during the selection

  • Quality: Two things could be observed with any well cut diamond. Firstly, good proportions are present in the gem, allowing optimized brilliance following are the parts of the gemstone which is considered for good proportion like: entire gem’s diameter, table diameter and depth. Secondly, light which enters diamond travels should travel back to eye. However, a poorly cut diamond would have light exiting from the bottom or its sides.
  • Color: When compared to colored diamonds, colorless ones are most preferred and therefore, are expensive. The reason is because, good amount of light enters former, thereby resulting in increased light refraction, making way for its brilliance and shine. But the exception to this particular rule is fancy colors like green or blue. Such gems are valued actually due to its color. The standard color grading system is followed by jewelers for determining the diamond’s ‘whiteness’. The system has ‘Z’ diamonds to have the lowest rating with brownish tint and ‘D’ having the highest one.
  • Clarity: Clarity is stated in the diamond if it does not possess any flaw in it. Lack of flaws are said to make it much more valuable and rarer gem. There are two types of flaws like surface flaws or blemishes which includes chips and scratches and the other one being inclusions or present inside or within the diamond. Diamond clarity could be higher, with flawless being rated as ‘F’ and ‘Included 3’ or I3 stated to be flaws visible to naked eyes.
